Written On The New York City Subway

In Excerpts of Prose, FOR YOUR CONSIDERSTION, poetry, Short Fiction on July 3, 2011 at 12:40 PM

The F Train runs the course of Manhattan into Brooklyn Heights.

Late one evening, on a Wednesday, she steps onto the south bound train to go home. She takes a window seat, alone at the end of the subway car. Biting her lower lip, she opens a book and begins reading. But not for long.

Distracted, she closes it and removes a pen from her purse. Using the beige paper bookmark, she begins to write.

I picked it up long after the train crossed into Brooklyn. It read:

Did you ever consider that maybe what we’ve got isn’t so bad?

Maybe what we have is more than what we’ve had.

And somehow we manage to sleep at night.

(The free flow of thought is like a magnet catching dust. And sense has a lock that’s covered over with a thin layer flaking red rust. My mind is somewhere behind.)

But what I have is so much more than what I have had.

We move,

In and out and up and down, back and forth, underneath some immovable force.

And every once in a while, we pause and stop

Step back

And realize what we’ve got:

A piece of ourselves at peace

I flipped the book mark over and the small, crips letters filled that back as well. I kept reading:

Even though it will never be enough.

Here I am

And holding to who I am

I humbly ask you

Who you are and what made you think

We could take it this far —

because

Without you I would not be me

Nor you without me, would not be you.

But I humbly ask

IF we have taken this too far

IF in this pause

I must bid you farewell

Remembering this, alone,

Until I am old and undone.

Because what we have is more than what I’ve had

To lose it unexpectedly would be horrorific.

Leave me mad.

The woman on the subway became real.

I did not even know her name.

I paused.

Ring-Around-A-Rosie, Lay Me Down To Sleep

In Daily Musings, FOR YOUR CONSIDERSTION, HAUNTED, poetry on February 16, 2011 at 10:02 PM

#FLASHVERSE 02:26

Ring a-round a-rosie

Pocket full of posies

Ashes

Ashes

We all

fall

DOWN

Now I lay me down to sleep

I pray the Lord my soul to keep

If I should die before I wake

I pray the Lord my soul to take

God Bless Mommy, and Daddy, Grama and Grampa….

There was a turtle by the name of Bert

Bert the turtle was very alert;
When danger threatened, he never got hurt
He knew just what to do…

He’d duck!

[gasp]

And cover!

Duck!

[gasp]

AND COVER!

He did what we all must learn to do

You

And You

And You

A N D   Y O U !

[bang, gasp]

Duck, and cover!

Here we go round the prickly pear
Prickly pear prickly pear
Here we go round the prickly pear
At five o’clock in the morning.

This is the way the world ends

This is the way the world ends

This is the way the world ends

Not with a bang but a…

Happily Ever After Slips Away

In NEW!, poetry on November 13, 2010 at 5:06 PM

Pretend away my sadness

take my hand

pull me towards make-believe

show me how again

make all this life

go somewhere else

let something better

take its place

~

Pretend away the lonliness

fill up the emptiness

hold up the mirror

I so desperately

want to see

a reflection I recognize

a person I know is me

~

It’s been a long, long time

since I laughed

It’s been a long, long time

since I heard laughter

It’s been a long, long time

since I remembered

or

sat around a dinner table

or

looked into another’s eyes

or

saw that spark

or

sparkles of light

sparkles with life

or just

shared a moment of pure joy

just for a second

or just

felt like it’s worth it

just

for a moment

~

It’s been a long, long time

since I remembered

~

Millions in this city

Makes me truly lonely

when I am alone

Pretend with me

I want to come back home

100 Years Lament

In 21st Century Culture, FOR YOUR CONSIDERSTION, poetry on November 11, 2010 at 4:13 PM

100 Years Lament

(Tune of Traditional Irish Drinking Ballad)

Lost are the boys of yesteryear

Leading triumphant with hurry-some cheer

Gone are the days of remember when

Soon to be forgotten like them

ø

Where did they go, some lament

While others claim, they were wasted and spent

I, by the fire, speak not a word

We all be at fault

as far as I’m concerned

ø

Broken shadows without hands for soap

No glad tidings before the rope

All is set and quiet my dear

Lighting the candles slowly in fear

Oh the men with their hats

The women with their bras

The chocolate in the grocery store

The writing on the walls

The lil’ babies talk

only to them screens

Human flesh to thems’

jus’a screen

From one generation

to the next generation

It’s your own damn fault

It’s our own damn fault.

Create the image that you will

Fall upon sword after sword

with each kill

Gone are the days of yesteryear

Gone are the sounds of rowdy cheer

Lost are the boys of all those years

Leading triumphant future cheers

Gone are the days of remember when

Soon to be forgotten like them

Gone are the days of remember when

Soon to be forgotten like them

Where did they go, some lament

While others claim, they were wasted and spent

I, by the fire, speak not a word

We be at fault cuz we n’ever learn

Oh the men with their hats

The women with their bras

The chocolate in the grocery store

The writing on the walls

The lil’ babies talk

only to them screens

Human flesh to thems’

jus’a screen

From one generation

to the next generation

It’s your own damn fault

It’s our own damn fault
